Analysing your website
Analytics
No need to pay an agency to tell you how many people are coming to your site and where they are coming from, you can do this for free. Set up an account with Google Analytics, add a simple bit of code to your pages and Google will start tracking visitors to your site. With this you'll learn:- Which sites are sending you the most traffic and more importantly you can see where low volumes are coming from with a view of improving your presence on these sites.
- Which keywords people are using to find you (this will help with choosing keywords for your pay per click activity)
- Which web browsers are most popular - potentially identifying a shortfall on one that you don't use yourself.
- How many people come back to your site and where in the world (literally) they are coming from.
Webmaster Tools
Google also offer the free webmaster tools, which will allow you to view how Google spiders your site - once you upload a small piece of code, a report on potential problems (i.e. broken links) is produced, which you can then fix. Depending on the size of your site, you should look at this regularly as Google's spiders are always working and finding new links. You may find the following video very interesting, it's presented by Matt Cutts, who works for Google! A very reliable source of information ...
